  1. It all started back in 1937 when it was first built and named Wheeling Downs.
  2. In the 1940s, it got a fancy makeover and earned the nickname “miniature Churchill Downs.”
  3. But, things took a turn for the worse in 1962 when a fire burned down the property. It was closed for five whole years while they rebuilt it.
  4. When Wheeling Downs re-opened in the 1970s, it featured harness and flat racing.
  5. In 1976, it transitioned from horse racing to greyhound racing and a new era began.
  6. Fast forward to 1988, Delaware North bought the property and helped it expand even more. They added a fancy clubhouse, dining room, and lounge.
  7. And in 1994, they introduced off-track betting and video slot games.
  8. In 1999, they added “reel” slot machines, and in 2002, the name changed to Wheeling Island Racetrack & Gaming Center.
  9. And in 2008, it became known as Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack and added table games to the mix. Talk about a journey!
